Tessa Perkins And Stereotyping

Parkins identifies such as assumptions that stereotypes are always negative and are not always about the minority groups less powerful (e.g upper-class 'twits')
However once a stereotype has been created its very hard to change although Perkins states that over a period of time can change and also can develope..


Stereotypes are not always negative; People assume that stereotypes are always a negative thing e.g the media portral on young troublesome youths and 'hoddie culture' however youth can be also be seen as a positive e.g GSCE results and a level result. 

They're also always not about minority groups or the less powerful people assume that stereotypes are aimed at and targeted towards the less powerful but this is not always the case, we can make assumptions about upper class.
They can be held by one owns group e.g stereotypes with in a group such as stereotypes that you could find in a school or social institution.

However stereotypes are not always false as they have some truth or where else would we get the representation from what we witness, what we read many stories in the media that helps us shape and can understand these stereotype.

Implication of Stereotypes. 

  • They are (negative)
  • They are about groups who have little or no social contact; by implication therefore they are not held about ones own group thats a stereotype of a stereotype.
  • They are about minority or represented groups most of the time are creating negative representations of the lower class possibly giving upper class more power. 
  • People hold stereotypes of groups believe them to be true  or do not. This could lead to negative behaviour or can lead to wrong assumptions being made. Because someone holds a stereotypes of a group, his or her behaviour towards a member of that group can be predicted. This can lead to unfair treatment of members of society, stereotypes are on invaluable aid to understanding the world and all stereotypes must have a bit of truth with how they influence people.
