Hypothermedic Needle Theory

  • That we have the media that creates it and the audience consume it.
  • The Hypothermedic needle theory is one of the first theories put together by the media outdated.
  • Different types of media. there is the source and then an impact.
  • Developed in 1920s and 30s.
  • After propaganda of the wars and war of worlds events is how the theory began.

The "Hypothermedic needle theory" implied mass media had a direct, immediate and powerful effect on it audience the mass media in the 1940s and 1950s were perceived as a powerful influence on behavior change.
Several factors contributed to this "Strong effects" theory of communications including.
The fast rise and popularization of radio and reduced the emergence of the persuasion industries such as advertising and propaganda.

The theory suggest that the mass media could influence a very large group of people directly and uniform by 'shooting' or 'injecting' them with appropriate messages designed too trigger a desired response.
This theory said that there is suggestion of a powerful and direct flow of information from the sender to the reader.
It's dangerous means of communicating an idea because the receiver or audience is powerless to resist the impact of the message.

  • People are seen as passive and are seen as having a lot, media material "Shot at them"  - which is what we see and why copy off it.
  • A famous case- In the 1930s a radio broadcast of 'War of the worlds' performed a fake news broadcast like a real to heighten the effect of the story, people listened through the broadcast and thought it was real and this quickly lead to misinterpretation
  • Cons of theory: Very out of date and invalid.
  • Not all people consume media in the same way
  • Not everyone watches the news/consumes media in the same way.
  • Audiences are not simply passive more up to the date theories have provide this,
